Day 100: 100 Days Of ...

(Mile 1537 to 1562 = 25 miles)

100 days of what?

Walking.

Eating dehydrated food.

Drinking from creeks, troughs, springs, lakes, rivers, and random containers.

Sleeping on the ground.

Living outside.

Rarely staying in the same place twice.

Relying on the kindness of strangers.

Wearing the same seven articles of clothing.

Solar charging.

Waking up at 5 AM and going to bed by 9 PM.

Blogging.

Searching for service.

Studying HalfMile's maps.

Eating meals on the ground.

Digging catholes.

Peeing in the brush.

Having filthy hands.

Checking in with "the babysitter" -- our SPOTs.

Greeting other thru-hikers like old friends.

Getting closer to Canada.

Getting farther from Mexico.

Admiring my 2012 PCT Thru-Hiker bandana.

Not burning down California.

Not working for pay.

Homelessness.

Sunsets.

Meals well-earned.

Conversations with the self.

Cousin companionship.

Looking forward to town food.

Eating Snickers.

Hauling around our lives on our back.

Photographs.

Bugs.

Birds.

Sunshine.

Anticipation.

Exhaustion.

Happiness.

Beauty.

And last, but not least, California.

We hit Oregon in 6 days.  We hit Canada in about 50.  The countdown (to Oregon, at least) is on.  The next 50 days will be all of the above, except California ... and burning it down.  We cannot wait to finally move on and do all if the above in another state!

  1. The sunrise photo is beautiful! You have taken some really spectacular photos! No wonder Carl wants to have a show of your photos when you get back. Lou

  2. I just finished catching up with your trip. I am planning to hike the Trail in 2015 and cannot wait! Your blog has just reaffirmed everything I am looking forward to about the trail.

You are also a great writer! I loved this post because it was so different then your others. Way to keep it fresh :) I hope my trail journal will be as inspiring and fun to read as yours.

Happy trails through Oregon and Washington (my home state!)

    1. You are planning even farther ahead than I! Nice work! You are going to love it. Especially when you hit your home state. There is nothing like it. :)

I, on the other hand, am a little intimidated by Washington...

  3. Dorothy,
I imagine you have already learned this from thru hikers travelling south and as you mentioned earlier, news travels fast on the trail so it may just be common knowledge by now, but my friend at ODF in Salem sent me a News Release today about a section of the PCT in southern Oregon being closed due to a recent wildfire outbreak in part of Umpqua NF. It's near Lemelo Lake. I am at home now so can't access the info she sent, but if you want more details and a map, I can post URL's here.

    1. Jill,

Thanks for the fire update, and keep them coming! We are all using all avenues of technology available to keep track of fires. They seem to be popping up everywhere. I have an eye on one north of Crater Lake and one near Mt. Jefferson. We detoured for one out of Seiad Valley, CA already.
