Desert lupine. Smelles so much better than us! |
Okay, just to
make sure everyone is up on what a trail name is, it is a name given to you by
fellow hikers while you are on trail.
Usually, you do or say something or just are a certain way, and this
earns you a trail name. You can give a
trail name and earn a trail name.
As I mentioned,
yesterday Shutterbug gave me Bacon Bit.
Today, Melissa earned hers from LT (short for Lieutenant -- a retired LA
police lieutenant we've been hiking with).
The first time we met LT, we were folded in two, stretching. And it seems most times LT bumps into
Melissa, she's stretching. And so he
gave her Gumby ... and she took it! HOORAY! We also seemed to have earned a team name
from Grasshopper, who we stayed with at Trail Angel Mike's. Word on the trail is that he's been calling
us "the Gymnasts."
And today, I
renamed LT. He got LT on the Appalachian
Trail. But see, we ate with LT this
morning at the Paradise Cafe (highlight of the day!), and it turns out the man
is also a substitute teacher. His
favorite age? The little ones! And he is a big guy. And you know that he has a terrifying big boy
voice. But he was telling stories about
all of the little kiddos he subs for in Virginia. Are you thinking what I was thinking? Kindergarten Cop. He even has a great Arnold voice. And has met Arnold a couple of times -- once
when Arnold was working with Jamie Lee Curtis on True Lies ... Jamie Lee Curtis
recognized KC because he had written her a ticket awhile back (of course he
did!) which prompted Arnold to tell him he should have arrested her. There is more to the story, but you get the
idea. He is wonderful to be around. And he's totally a Kindergarten Cop. (He's now also a seasonal interp ranger for
the NPS on the Blue Ridge Parkway!)
Gumby with her toast and frenchtoast. |
Me with my Sante Fe with bacon. And real coffee! |
So today, we
were so excited about Paradise Cafe and so busy with trail names and hanging
out with Kindergarten Cop and Shutterbug, that we barely noticed the 18 miles
we covered. Well, except for the last 2
-- all up hill. Tomorrow, we try to make
it to town for showers, laundry, internet, and a full day off!
Earl? Rory? What is this?? |
Bacon Bit! I like it! You may even get to eating real food full time when you come back! By the way, Mother's Day went very well. Dylan is doing a great job and is fun to work with. Lou
ReplyDeleteI love it that LT is from Virginia - since that is where my family is from (all but me).n :)
ReplyDeleteHi Dorothy,
ReplyDeleteThe flower looks like a pineapple sage or some kind of sage.
One of my wildflower experts says the red flower might be a chuparosa -- visited by hummingbirds and bees. Thanks, Earl!
ReplyDeleteCan't see enough to be certain, but I do believe the flower is Scarlet Bugler ... a penstemon. Enjoying your journal! Happy Trails, Two Legs
ReplyDeleteYes, I'd agree with that one - a penstemon of some sort. I've called it Firecracker plant in the past.
