(Mile 1454 to
mile 1482, over McCloud River = 28 miles!)
It is late, and
we are camped out right next to the trail on what appears to be an abandoned
road. There is poison oak
EVERYWHERE. And everywhere is sloped. This is as good as it gets. We were relieved to find this at 9 pm
tonight. We are tired, but we are happy
to have covered our most miles yet. Twenty-eight
big ones! We might not have gone so far,
but we are eager to get to Castle Crags and catch the Niemeyers, and the
terrain simply wouldn't allow us to stop sooner. But, as Gumby says, "We always find a
spot." You just have to have faith.
Today was hot
and humid. The trail was in a bit better
condition, and there were a few huge doug-firs, a couple of yew groves, and a
nice ridge walk, but this mostly is not my favorite part of the Trail. Problem Bear says it gets better after Castle
Crags. Here is hoping. I AM excited to see the Marbles.
Other than that
... it is getting a little mentally tough again. We're not going crazy, we just miss home and
the little comforts of life. I do think
Oregon and Washington will fly by.
Oregon with friends and sights I cannot wait to share with Gumby, and
Washington with the pure exhilaration of nearly finishing. We are not ready to be off trail, it just
seems like we've been on for a loooong time.
Tomorrow, we hit 1500! And then
we're border-bound! But now we need to
rest before another big day. Night!
